Homemade Dog Food
If feeding those you love is your love language, then making homemade dog food will be right up your alley.
Over a year ago I started to make our dogs’ food. We had an eleven year old Rottweiler and a nine year old yellow lab, at the time, and they were both over weight. Our yellow lab is allergic to wheat so we were already spending quite a bit of money on special kibble for him.
Long story short, shortly after the dogs started getting homemade food, their coats were shinier, they dropped weight, and they acted like their elder aches and pains were better. They love the food.
It’s a bit labor intensive if making a big batch, but it is worth it for their health and happiness. After all, we are their whole world for their whole life, may as well make it a good one.
Recipe:
Meat: Ground meat (poultry or red meat), roast, or steaks
canned tuna or sardines (in water)
Peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, blue berries (use fresh, canned or frozen- UNSEASONED. I only cook the sweet potatoes and use room temperature everything else)
Brown Rice
Whole Eggs
Cook meat until no pink.
I use the above fruits and vegetables. You can use whatever you want (except corn, it is just sugar for your dog)
Tuna or sardines are for fat that your dog needs.
I put the whole eggs in with the rice when the water is almost absorbed, letting them cook for one minute then crush them into the rice so it forms kind of a custard as the rice continues to cook. (egg shells are good for dogs, trust me on this)
When everything is cooked, I drain the meat if it has a lot of grease, etc. and mix everything together. I store in the refrigerator and make more as needed.
