choices

It’s often said that the only thing we have control over is our attitude. I don’t believe that. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I believe we have control over our reactions and attitudes; however, I also believe we have control over much more than just that. We make choices all the time; and those choices give control.

There are a myriad of things that we choose each day, big and small, all of which we have control over: what to have for breakfast, what clothes to wear, how to do our hair. Yes there are things out of our control as well: other’s behavior, illness, world events, the weather, etc. But what affects us the most, is usually within our control.

So many people feel stuck, by not making a choice, and by choices already made. People are paralyzed by fear or unmovable because of current circumstances. They feel powerless to make a change, as if they have no choices, and therefore, no control. But in reality the way forward, for all of us, is not out there, it is on the inside of all of us. The door handle is on our side of the door. Want a door open. Open it.

Of course that is easier said than done for most. Most of us are frozen in place because of the work it will take to make change. The choices seem too big, or too hard. There is comfort in not making choices. Letting others have control. After all, with choices made and control, comes responsibility; and that can be heavy and hard.

Sometimes it is fear holding us in place. It’s OK to stay in the same place, to not make any progress, if that’s what you want to do; but don’t ever say that you don’t have a choice. That is a choice. Greatness isn’t given, it’s taken. It’s a choice. Most fears are also a choice. At the very least succumbing to them is a choice. We create most fears in our minds- fear of failure, fear of change, fear of what others will think, fear of succeeding, etc. If we create it, we can change it. Flip the script on your fears. The popular saying: “What if I fall? Oh my dear, but what if you fly?” Is appropriate here. What if you soar?
