Women are solo hiking- and I’m here for it

Women are becoming hikers. Of course there have always been women hikers. But the trend of women hiking alone, backpacking solo, and trail running away from everyone else, is on the rise.

Hikers, in general, follow some unspoken rules. They know where they are going and if they are capable of getting there. They know what gear to bring and wear. They know the snacks to bring, the pictures to take, and the precautions to take.

If hiking up and then down a mountain, most people now take trekking poles; they don’t wear new footwear for fear of dreaded blisters; and they wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather. (layering and non-chafing clothing are musts)

Although anyone can be a solo hiker, women are thought to be safer if they go with someone; perhaps that is true but let’s dissect that. What do women need to be kept safe from, that men do not? If they do all of the above recommendations, what is left? Their personal safety. Women have less blood in their bodies, smaller bones and muscles, and their endurance is less than a man’s. So biology says. But there are some women who could beat a man arm wrestling and a lot of women beat men in races every year.

What women need to be wary of when hiking alone is predators: human-kind and bears. Let’s face it, most men don’t fear the first and know what to do with the second (until they wet their pants when one is charging them).

How can women remain safe while hiking, running, walking, etc., alone? Awareness and preparation.

-Bear spray is the best thing to have with you during a hike. Bear spray is very effective against a bear attack, when used correctly, and it is a great deterrent against any human that wishes harm.

-Not wearing ear-buds helps to keep you aware and able to hear any approaching animals.

-Knowing where you are going, timing, and your ability. Let someone know where you are going but don’t post it or announce it to the world.

Enjoy yourself and give a big high-five to any other single women you pass on the trail. We are out there and we are loving it.
