REGULATION

Recognizing what state your nervous system is in, with the understanding of why and how; you are now ready for Regulation of your nervous system.

Big Idea: It’s all connected

POLYVAGAL Theory

Dr. Stephen Porges developed the Polyvagal theory which  explains how the autonomic nervous system (ANS) interprets danger or safety.

Interpreted safety or danger determines emotional and behavioral responses through three pathways:

1) The Ventral Vagal Complex (Social Engagement):  vagus nerve system that promotes safety, calmness, and social behaviors

2) The Sympathetic Nervous System (Mobilization): fight or flight trigger when danger is perceived

3) Dorsal Vagal Complex (Immobilization):  freezing or shutdown (dissociation)

  • Neuroception: is a subconscious process by which the nervous system scans the environment for determining if it is safe which leads to one of the three pathways being activated.

  • Co-regulation: using social cues (facial expressions, etc) to regulate each other's nervous systems for emotional stability
